Teach Your Children

Background on our 2014 theme: “Let Us Rise Up and Build
—————————

Among the last words that Moses spoke to Israel were what is called The Shema (Deut. 6:4-9) and, according to S.R. Driver, it is “the fundamental truth of Israel’s religion.” It begins with, “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one!” At the heart of Israel’s religion is monotheism; one God. Israel’s response to the one God was to “love the Lord your God…keep all His …commandments…and teach them diligently to your children…” (6:2, 4, 6-7). The teaching of the words of God to the children would assure the continuance of the nation’s fellowship with God and would secure the children’s futures.

Israel recognized that children were gifts from God (Ps. 127:3-5); and that a parent’s responsibility was to live the commandments of God before them, and to teach them God’s word. Is it any less important today to consider children as gifts from God? Is it any less needful that parents live out the Lord’s will before their children today? Even a casual reading of the New Testament (see Eph. 6:4) cries out for a negative answer to these questions.

To put it in a positive affirmation, of course parents need to see their children as gifts from God; of course parents need to live right before their children; and of course parents need to teach their children the things of God. There are times when parents do their best in these matters and in the end are disappointed with the choices their children make. This is sad. But, sadder still is the fact that some parents lose their children without a fight. Children watch their parents, know what is important to their parents, and understand how important or unimportant God’s will is to them.

The darkness out there is ready and eager to swallow up our children and parents who can see that homework for school is done, games attended, designer clothes bought, and social graces observed, but who just can’t seem to make it to worship and Bible study, who can’t find the time to talk about God, and who really put their Christianity on the back burner are about to pay a tremendous price…perhaps the spiritual loss of those precious gifts from God. It must make angels weep.
